Beneath the Palms
Published in Hardcover by Wimmer Companies, Inc. (December, 1996)
Authors: Junior Service League of Brownsville, Junior Service League of Brownsville Tex, and Brownsville Junior Service League
Average review score:

One of the most versatile cookbooks I've encountered.
I purchased Beneath the Palms and found it to be one of the most reached for cookbooks in my kitchen, of which I have many. The range of recipes from casual to fine dining fits all occasions. In particular I find the Cilantro Vinaigrette, Beef Tenderloin with Peppercorn Crust and Whiskey Sauce, Boursin Cheese Spread, and Asparagus with Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto easy but elegant enough for entertaining. For a wonderful cool meal try Chilled Avocado Soup, Redfish with Mango Salsa, and Papaya Puree. You can't beat the Tropical Fruit Glazed Cheesecake Tart or the Apricot Doboschtorte for dessert

BEST BIKE PATHS OF THE SOUTHWEST : Safe, Scenic and Traffic-Free Bicycling
Published in Paperback by Fireside (04 April, 1996)
Author: Wendy Williams
Average review score:

Nice collection of Bike paths in the southwest
This book covers bike paths and routes in several cities in Arizona (14 routes), Southern California (6 routes), Northern California (26 routes), Nevada (2 routes) and Utah (8 routes). There are no maps of the routes but the author does a pretty good job of describing them. The descriptions are pretty detailed including such things as places to park, restroom locations, places to eat, level of difficulty, and condition of pavement.

This book seems to be written with the casual cyclist in mind. If you're looking for a route where you can "hammer" out 40 miles at a fast pace then this book is not for you. If you're looking for a place to enjoy a leisurely weekend ride with friends or children, then this book was designed with you in mind, For example, in their level of difficulty ranking the authors consider a 3-mile route with rolling hills to be "challenging."

The only negative comment I have about the book was that it was written about 5 years ago so some of these routes may have changed over the years. For most of the routes, the author does provide a phone number to call to get more information about the route. If you're traveling to a new area and plan to ride one of these routes you may want to call ahead of time to make sure the route or bike path still exists or has not changed.

Best Hikes & Walks of Southwestern British Columbia
Published in Paperback by Lone Pine Publishing (June, 2003)
Author: Dawn Hanna
Average review score:

This Is The One
A Vancouver group of friends decided to start walking and hiking for pesonal challenge and a chance to enjoy the beautiful place they lived in. For a few months they limped along with few, outdated, and poorly described hiking guides. One of them read about Dawn Hanna's new book on the internet, purchased it, and I'd like to thank Dawn for providing the kind of guide we've been looking for.

This easy-to-use, fits-your-pocket gem provides well-described directions and levels of challenge, along with maps and climatic information, as well as wonderful legends & history; Dawn's passion for hiking the area is inspiring. This book is a got-to-take item for your hikes, only preceded by your water bottle.

Okies know how to cook!
Selected Recipes from Oklahoma's Favorite Cookbooks.

When the editors titled this 'the best of the best' they weren't kidding. They have taken some of the best recipes from other Oklahoma cookbooks and combined them. The result is this wonderful cookbook full of easy, delicious ideas!

Although I enjoyed the Native American pictures and the drawings (they are beautiful to look at), I have to say my eyes had to first take in all the recipes, yum-yum. We have the usual contents from Appetizers to Desserts. The variety of recipes is wide; they are not focused on only what's considered Oklahoma cuisine. You will find a recipe for Clam Chowder right along with one for Rabbit Stir-Fry (haven't tried that one, I prefer petting them to eat them).

I promise you it doesn't matter where you live, you will enjoy trying the best recipes in Oklahoma. Brenda @ MyShelf.com

Great Food - Great Book!
This was one of the very first cookbooks I ever purchased and it has been a mainstay in my kitchen ever since. The recipes are clear and concise. Not to mention all the recipes are incredibly delicious. I was raised in Austin and now reside in Colorado so it was great to take this cookbook with me. My family and I love the brisquet recipe, the chicken fried steak, king ranch chicken and countless others. It was also nice to be able to bring some of the great food I grew up on into my own kitchen and prepare these meals for friends and family. This is definitely a cookbook for anyone who loves southern, texmex and the in between. I highly recommend it. Texans definitely know how to cook!

Black Unionism in the Industrial South (Texas A&m Southwestern Studies, 11)
Published in Paperback by Texas A&M University Press (August, 2001)
Author: Ernest Obadele-Starks
Average review score:

Excellent Book about Black Unionism
I had to read this book for my history class (my Professor is Ernest Obadele-Starks!) This book gives all the inside scoop about why and how unions were formed, how the FECP help minorities, and some of the flaws of the FECP. I think it's a good book to read to learn more about unions and racism during the mid 1900's. I think Dr. Starks is an excellent professor and this book tells a lot about his knowledge in the subject.

Boystown: LA Zona De Tolerancia

what a book
This book will knock your socks straight off. These photographs were taken by, apparently, amateur photographers, but they are simply magical. Although these photographs were [taken] in Mexican brothels, they speak volumes about the American Southwest. A must have for collectors of the great photography books of our time. Part of the permanent OilCan collection.
